My name is Brittany Rostron and I am the 18-year-old president of Project Sage Horse Rescue on Long Island NY. I rescue horses from feed lots that would otherwise be shipped to Canada and slaughtered for human consumption in other countries. I have saved 16 horses in the month of July. Some have been rehabilitated and adopted by loving homes and some are still in the process of waiting for a forever home.
I run fundraiser's to help support my cause and enable other horses to be saved from imminent death. At this time I am asking if you would help me help the horses. I am having a fundraiser at the large grounds of Hillcrest Stables in Riverhead, NY on September 14th at 1:00 pm. This will be a large event including demonstrations of different riding disciplines, vendors, and food. The Project Sage Event to Save the Horses will be an event attended by many people across New York, New Jersey and the surrounding areas.
Please come and donate your time and expertise for a demonstration for viewers at our event. We do not want to limit our event to certain disciplines , but open all people to different worlds where they can learn about and enjoy horses. This accomplishment will allow me to rescue more horses in the future.
I look forward to hearing from you regarding this matter,
I'm sending you a flyer for our only fundraising event this year and the 1st ever pace in the Muttontown Preserve in memory of a real sweetie most of you knew, Ed Wrigley.(Ed had been working w/ MHA towards the objective of holding a pace but there were many safety objections raised by the county and it took a few years to finally make this a reality )
We are hoping this event is a super success for a number of reasons ----but want to show the county that a pace is a fun and safe event that many equestrians enjoy & support!
MHA also needs funds --as we have been forced to do more and more maintenance over the years and just financially supported an eagle scout project that redid the fencing of the small ring there and are planning to do the same w/ a scout for the large ring.
Sooo...... please share the flyer w/ your friends ----please consider doing the pace -----if you don't pace , come and have lunch and watch or better yet, help us out that day and volunteer as a street crosser /lunch server/ timer etc.
And ---do your prayers that we have good weather!!
best regards,
Kathleen

Despite the unfortunate postponement of the ride last week [I’ll never listen to the weathermen again] most everyone showed up today and many more who did not preregister. The weather today was perfect for a day in the country, riders, drivers, and hikers all enjoyed the day tremendously. I don’t know the exact amount collected today but with over 100 players and many taking advantage of a yard of raffle tickets for $ 20 I’m sure we did well. Many repeat riders, who come for the food and fun, were joined by new friends of Connetquot.
Many good friends help make this day happen. Gil Bergen, Brian, Pat, Linda, Pam, Gary and the rest of the capable staff at the park. Friends board members Bob Labuski, Richard Remmer, Dottie Andersen, Edith and Bob Wilson, Bob Hoover and our new treasurer Marianne Kinane and family. Volunteers, Ken and Annette Leitch, Doug and Jean Kruger, Charles Arciello, Donna Quent and her daughter Donna , Maryann and Gil Kelly, Sofie Lowe, Ed Handibode, John Linitz and my best friend Rita who does so much.
All the delicious food was prepared by generous friends of the preserve. We would like to thank all our generous donors who helped make this year’s edition a success. Our generous sponsors who help underwrite the expenses, include The Smithtown Hunt, Jacquie and Doug Harned, The Nassau-Suffolk Horseman’s Association, The Islip Horseman’s Association, The Paumanok Driving Club, Dawn Electric, Farm Family Insurance Vincent Daley broker, Landscaping by Chris Pratt, Ted and Margot Hubbard, Chris Simonetti real estate, Green Rose Farm, The Old Westbury Polo Club and LI Equine Medical Center Dr. Greg Beroza.

Martha Clara Vineyard, Sound Avenue, Jamesport
10:00am-3:00pm
Spring Vineyard Ride 2008 Saturday May 31, 2008 Rain date June 1, 2008 SPONSORSHIP OPPORTUNITY REACH 0VER 100 HORSE OWNERS, RIDERS AND SPECTATORS
The fifth Annual Spring Vineyard to Vineyard wine tasting tour on Horseback will be held May 31st on Long Island’s scenic North Fork at 10am. This event benefits the restoration of the Old Field Farm, and the Nassau Suffolk Horseman’s Association. The East End Livestock and Horseman’s Association has volunteered to assist with the ride. All three organizations are native to Long Island and are recognized as charitable organizations under IRS law.
This is a day when three regional horsemen’s groups unite to celebrate “the horse” and underscore the importance of preserving the beautiful open spaces and vistas of Long Island that we will travel through on this special day. It is a day to gather equestrians from divergent equestrian disciplines, without the structure of a formal competition or public performance; and be a day to simply enjoy, appreciate outdoor life and respect these beautiful vistas that must be carefully preserved for generations to come.
One hundred riders as well as spectators and “hilltoppers” will assemble at Martha Clara Vineyard for light continental breakfast and a champagne toast send off. Groups of riders will walk, trot and canter to Paumanok and Jamesport Vineyards for a suite of tastings lead by each hosting Vineyard’s experts. The tour will conclude with a gourmet luncheon and wines at Martha Clara Vineyard.
This equestrian lifestyle event is perfect for reaching the target audience for your business. Horse owners, riders, friends and relatives as well as those visiting the vineyards for the day (well over 100 participants) will be present. This event presents a unique opportunity to reach the Long Island equestrian community in one place. Sponsorships are available at various levels.

TRAILS
Getting that spring fever you want to go trail riding???..... But I have bad news with the heavy snow and winter this year branches, tree’s, and other stuff have falling into you’re path or caved in causes you to duck (now lets hope you’re horse doesn’t bolt at this time since he hadn’t been out in a while). The Trails are a mess since they have not been kept up (but thanks for the few that did clean) the trails have began to close in leaving you a very unpleasant ride after all its been awhile you’re horse is also pretty hot or spooky. So if you go riding remember to bring brush clippers with you so you don’t have to struggle through all the brush. On March, 13 April, 24 May,15 June, 26 …2010 I would like you to join us Ridge riders to get together talk, and clean up our trails, towards the end maybe after we clean up we can get together and chat in a backyard with a nice fire, BBQ, hangout and get some laughs and talk about some troubles, ideas, etc. Please email me and give me some ideas that we can do. HAPPY TRAILS TO YOU ALL!!!! Lacour_Jenna@yahoo.com Thanks, Jenna

Bureau of Land Management
A Bill to Amend the Wild Horse and Burro Act of 1971: Perhaps the single most important development so far this year is the recent introduction of HR 1018 by Congressmen Rahall (D-WV) and Grijalva (D-AZ). This legislation would amend the Wild Horse and Burro Act in numerous ways. You can read the bill by clicking here. The intent of the Bill is to strengthen protections for both wild horses on the range and in captivity. You can read my comments to the Congressmen here.
HR 1018 would allow for the expansion of wild horse habitat. We hope that this would support our arguments regarding the legal expansion of Cloud’s herd on the Pryor Mountains. Range expansion would eliminate BLM’s stated reason (lack of forage in the designated range) for reducing the herd to genetically non-viable levels, thereby destroying this genetically unique herd of Spanish mustangs.
The BLM Herd Management Plan, which has not yet been adopted, calls for a herd of only 90-120 animals in the Pryors. Legally expanding the range to areas which wild horses historically used and are using at the present time would also prevent the scheduled round up of 60 wild horses in August. This round up would represent the largest round up in the history of the Pryor Wild Horse Range. Please click here to contact the Billings BLM office so you can automatically receive information from them on their management plans for Cloud’s herd.
I would encourage you to get involved by thanking the Congressmen for their efforts with HR 1018 and encouraging them to specifically support the Pryor Wild Horses by preventing the planned destruction of the herd in August. Click here to contact them.
Range Expansion: Please communicate directly with the new Secretary of Agriculture, Tom Vilsack and the new Supervisor of the Gallatin and Custer National Forests, Mary Erickson requesting that that the Pryor Mountain Wild Horse Range be expanded to reflect the historic and current use areas of the rare Pryor wild horses.
BLM Advisory Board Meeting: We CANNOT allow the herd to be destroyed and we CANNOT allow Cloud and his family and the other wonderful families of wild horses on this spectacular mountain to be ripped apart. I delivered this message to the BLM Advisory Board at their meeting this Monday in Reno. Thanks to Sally Summers and Horse Power in Reno, you can view that meeting by clicking here . The bias of this Advisory Board boggles the imagination. It is stacked with vested special interest members, but there is hope. Three new positions will be opening up. I was nominated but have less than no chance of being appointed as I am too outspoken on behalf of the horses. But, we hope at least one new member speak on behalf of the public and our wishes to always have wild horses on our wide western landscapes. You can read my comment letter to the Board here.

Outlaw Acres has been on the road showing new KY bred Mare Rita Time. She put on in three shows 7 1/2 points. That relates on the bottom side to $20,782 and top side $26, 475. Not bad for under a month of showing. (If you have 17 in a class and get 2nd its 2 points to give you an idea) Last show out she pulled a 2nd in open Barrels and a 2nd in Open Poles. Of course not all the top guns were out at these shows but a good 8 out of 17 were (Congres, World and top 10 placers show in NJ) and we beat them a few times, so she is on a roll keeping up in times with the big guns . Actually she had the time to beat all day at NJ show in Open to All breed, shame it was not in the open QH run. She gets better each run, a young mare with training just started late winter, so she is on course now. She also won IBRA series buckle 1D her first Belt Buckle in PA with Laura Lee Thomas.
Congrats to Ken and Clarrise as they have a new 4 year old ready to go show QH that is KYQH BIF. They came to one show saw what we won and all their other KYBIF breds being under 3 they went off and bought another they can run now. The talk all over QH is about KY breds. The top breeders ones that are in the know, doing this for years, saying what a great move we made sending our stud to KY as they can't get a thing sold unless it's KY Bred. They are also moving some stock next year to KY. They love Tanner and even found a running mare to breed to him. Now over 500 QH stallions in KY and in tow 1,000's of mares with them. The more QH's we bring in to KY, the bigger % of the total pot we get. The money is up because it works on tax on stallion fees and that is also up and off the wall. Yes, and lots more showing but the stock in KY in previous years not the best stock in wp,hus, barrels and halter so it will take a few years to exhaust it and by that time the money will be up again. Lots of people breed, but don't get the horse broke right, or something happens to the horse, or they never bred good enough to win so that money will be floating for a few years until the top guns get going in KY.
Gerard Smith with his two geldings in Amateur has made 9 1/2 points relating to $26,381 low end $33,535 high end in three weeks. You get paid in Amateur also, so a person who can place in Amateur and open is going to cash in for sure. He has only had them three weeks and this show with a little work from Laura Lee on the young one and Gerard working with the older one it paid off.
Yes, they are selling lots of horses cheap in KY because they can. It's a sellers dream. Some farms I talked to selling good mares to buy Great mares. They don't have the best studs so buying better mares is their answer for now until they find or breed a better stud. Or make the money to buy a better stud. Makes sense, and hold on to your first good colt out of that mare to put up for stud. Some selling because they can, and they think it will end and using opportunity to sell. You have to watch what you buy but I have got good deals for sure. Especially broodmares and lots of venues to sell mares in foal for a good price setting up all over KY. If you set up in KY with a place to send a broodmare it's money in your pocket, if you did your homework and bred right. You have to get points to make money, so breeding is being done selectivly now.
Will it end I don't think so, not in the next 10 years and even $1,000 a point in later years, with a horse like we have that can put on 50 to 100 points a year is $50,000 to $100,000 I will take that in ten years. It never ended for the race horses, standard breds and TB's in KY. It only got bigger for them now. You have to breed for a champion and that's what we have been doing for years, now it's Rita's Time to make the money back on her broodmares she has been hoarding for years. Whoo Hoo !!!!!
Halter and Barrels right now are the two biggest entry classes with QH in WV, KY and NJ. The PA show last year had a lot of entries in pleasure so with our coming pleasure prospects we will hit those shows with the pleasure and Hunter prospects. You have to do your homework and watch your travel to get the best out of your fuel dollar. You can check the results of last year and see what states show what . KYQH has made it possible to still travel and be able to pay the fuel and toll bill. Best thing to happen to QH in years.
On a at home note Outlaws Vixen at English shows cleaning up 3 Grand Champion and 1Reserve Champion with Emma in beginner divisions and Nicole in the bigger divisions. Kathy's new horse , Denalie moved up to 2nds with Kerrie and all had a good time at Hidden Pond shows . Potential Judge "Lilly" the horse we showed last year in Baby Green to 8th end of year with USEF won all her divisions at a NJ show and was SOLD on the spot. Coolest Brite Star our Congress Halter guy, off doing 2 foot 6 over scary jumps, and loving it. We took Debbies advice, got him out all last summer over scay fences, and it paid off he is winning in NJ as well.
Looking forward to IHA and LIHS English , Western and Gymhana shows and NBHA shows. We do have a few ready for rated shows and will try some on LI and NJ with our Trainer Jim Smith. The shows held in NJ have huge indoors they showed all winter, that helped the Lilly Sale for sure. We will try that next winter. We are bringing home our short stirrup prospect and she is just gorgeous. Her name is Just A Beau Kaye and we call her Petunia. She already won a Reserve in short stirup. A very small petite QH light chestnut almost dun with a dish face and a personality to match her looks. Look for her on LIequine for sale in a few days. We need to take some pictures and a video first. She will turn heads for sure.
We are especially excited to do the HUS classes offered at the IHA show this summer, just like we show at QH and it should be fun.
Happy Spring and Good Luck to all the LI riders this season
